What-to-Wear Wednesday #20: Football Game

Yesterday marked the first day of fall. In my world, fall means going back to school, pumpkin syrup is back at Starbucks, and football. When I was in high school, there was rarely a weekend I didn’t cheer on the East High Black Raiders from the stands.

Since I wasn’t a cheerleader, in the marching band, or didn’t have the convenience of dating a football player in order to wear his jersey, deciding what to wear to a football game was always a major undertaking.

Though it may seem like a simple sporting event, the dilemma of deciding what to wear comes in finding the balance between being comfortable, cute, and supporting your school by wearing its colors - heaven forbid you accidentally wear the colors of the opposing team.

There were many things I loved about my alma mater. Not among those things were my school’s colors: orange and black. Orange is nobody’s best color and by pairing orange and black together, you can quickly slide down the slippery slope of looking like a jack-o-lantern gone very wrong.

So, in an effort to help you determine what to wear to cheer on your team this fall, here are a few suggestions:

Layer up. By wearing lots of layers, you can stay warm as the stadium cools down. I love this scarf. I also think this jacket is a great casual option. Putting this scarf, this lightweight hoodie, and this jacket together would keep you looking cute and warm.

Stay comfortable. Jeans are always the best option for a football game. I think these, these, or these are great options. These are some great tops that would work well for staying comfy.

Get creative. Since it’s pretty rare to find an orange and black outfit outside of resorting to putting on a pumpkin trash bag over black leggings (which is probably not comfortable or warm), I always had to get pretty creative. I love these tops that incorporate a few great colors. I also love the idea of putting on one of your school’s T-shirts under a great jacket or vest with a matching scarf and cute hat.

So, enjoy cheering on your team! Go Black Raiders!
